Case description

This video was part of the Video Loop during the SAGES 2020 Virtual Meeting. Topic: Miscellaneous / Other Laparoscopic Splenectomy Following Spontaneous Splenic Rupture. Tarik Yuce, MD, Charles Logan, MD, Ezra Teitelbaum, MD. Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

We present a case of laparoscopic splenectomy following spontaneous splenic rupture in a 31-year-old male. The patient presented with abdominal pain and was found to have heterogeneous filling of the spleen and hemoperitoneum on CT. After entry into the abdomen, a large amount of clot was removed and the spleen was mobilized. This video highlights the key steps of a laparoscopic splenectomy, including mobilization of the splenic ligaments, division of the short gastrics, and dissection of the retroperitoneal attachments. Following the procedure, a complete hematology workup was notable for +EBV, providing an etiology for his spontaneous splenic rupture.
