Case description

Gangrenous cholecystitis is a severe form of acute cholecystitis, which results from marked distention of the gallbladder with increased tension in the wall. Associated inflammation leads to ischemic necrosis of the gallbladder wall, with or without associated cystic artery thrombosis. Factors such as male sex, advanced age, delay in seeking treatment, leukocytosis, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes mellitus increase the likelihood of developing gangrenous cholecystitis and carry a significantly higher mortality rate between 15% and 50%.
