Laparoscopic Resection of an Epiphrenic Diverticulum

Benjamin Clapp MD
Providence Memorial Hospital, El Paso, TX

Objective: Esophageal diveriticula can be divided into three kinds; epiphrenic, pharyngoesophageal and midesophageal. The treatment of the epiphrenic diverticulum had evolved in the last decade to include the laparoscopic approach.

Methods: This is a video demonstrating a laparoscopic resection of an epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum. The video gives a short case history and the preoperative imaging. Then the resection is performed laparoscopically. The video goes through the appropriate steps of the operation and ends with and intraoperative endoscopy to check for any occult injury.

Results: The epiphrenic diverticulum is resected safely using a laparoscopic approach.

Conclusions: Epiphrenic diveriticula can be safely resected using laparoscopy.
