Case description

ECMO, or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, is a life-saving medical technique used in cases of severe respiratory or cardiac failure. The VV (veno-venous) type of ECMO specifically focuses on providing respiratory support by oxygenating and removing carbon dioxide from the patient's blood. In VV ECMO, blood is withdrawn from a vein, typically in the neck or groin, and passed through an artificial membrane oxygenator before being returned to the patient's body through another vein. This allows the patient's lungs to rest and heal while ensuring their blood remains adequately oxygenated and free of excess carbon dioxide. VV ECMO is a crucial intervention in cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or severe pneumonia when conventional mechanical ventilation alone is insufficient to maintain oxygenation. It provides a bridge to recovery, giving patients a chance to heal while their lungs regain functionality.
