Case description

Background: The number of patients with end–stage renal disease in Poland is increasing. Due to imbalance between demand for organs for transplantation and their accessibility, there is a need to find new, more effective methods to obtain new organs for transplantation. Kidney transplantation from a living kidney donor increases the number of organs for transplantation.The aim is to increase social awareness on the subject of transplantation as well as increase living kidney donation. Material and methods: For programme’s sake standards of training course for dialysis units and families of patients who are dialysed have been established. Within the framework of National Program for the Development of Transplantation Medicine 89 local coordinators working at dialysis units have been appointed. There were 4 centers taking part in the programme: Teaching Hospital of the Infant Jesus (SKDJ), Hospital “Children’s Health Memorial Centre (CZD), Independent Public Central Teaching Hospital, (SPCSK) and Medical University of Gdańsk (GUM). During the period of 08.10.2011 – 31.12.2012 in voivodeships, which were included in the Programme, 47 training courses for staff, 25 meetings with patients’ families and 18 media appearances have been made. Results: As a result of activities under the programme, an increase in the number of potential donor – recipient pairs has been observed. During 08.10.2011 – 31.12.2012 there were 48 applications in SKDJ, in 14 cases living kidney donation took place. Conclusion: As a result of the programme there was an increase in the number of living kidney donations of 222% in 2012, compared to year 2009, i.e. before initiating the Programme
