Case description

In this condition, the filiform papillae disappear from localized areas of the tongue resulting in a patchy red area of depapillation, which is known as geographic or "map" tongue. These patches repapillate after variable time and new areas of depapillation may occur on the tongue. Two large islands of depapillation on the lateral borders of the tongue are shown in this photograph.
