Case description

This photograph shows the contents of the maxillary sinuses in a patient with allergic fungal sinusitis and recurrent nasal polyps. These khaki coloured rubbery masses contained numerous entrapped elements of the fungus Aspergillus. This material is characteristic of patients with allergic fungal sinusitis. The allergic reaction to the entrapped fungal elements was responsible for the rapid recurrence of the nasal polyps. Not surprisingly, these nasal polyps were highly steroid sensitive.
