Case description

This plug of cerumen has been placed in a petri dish and is shown before the application of an aqueous solution of 10% sodium bicarbonate and water. The concept that there is any "wax" in earwax is a fallacy. As will be demonstrated in the next photograph, earwax consist primarily of large sheets of desquamated keratin. The only cerumenolytics that are ineffective in breaking up cerumen consist of an aqueous-based solution. Following extensive experimentation, the most effective cerumenolytic is 10% sodium bicarbonate in water, and the next most effective cerumenolytic is water.
