Case description

Tympanic membrane perforations can be classified into central and peripheral. Peripheral perforations as seen here are frequently associated with a cholesteatoma whereas central perforations are not. Note the peripheral perforation in the posterior quadrant of this left tympanic membrane [3 o'clock position] through which an accumulation of white keratin debris can be seen. This is a cholesteatoma.
