Case description

Chronic membranous otitis externa is an idiopathic condition in which a golden yellow cast develops from the lining of the entire external auditory canal. This appears to be a failure in the normal mechanism of migration but also the result of chronic inflammation of the external canal skin which exudes some serious fluid. Generally speaking these casts are relatively easily removed as once grasped they come out in one piece. This is a recurrent condition in which the casts may build up again as quickly as four weeks.
