Case description

This is a case of very severe acute otitis externa in which the skin of the cartilaginous external canal has swollen to such an extent that it is beginning to occlude the meatus. When the meatus becomes occluded, a wick may need to be inserted so that the appropriate topical antibiotic drops can be carried into the canal. In some cases systemic antibiotics may also be required
