Case description

One of the most common questions a foot specialist gets in the clinic is the origin of the bunion deformity. The medical description for bunions is "hallux valgus" or "big toe leaning towards the second toe". Its is primary a genetic deformity, but can be acquired from poor foot function or excessive pronation. Rarely are they caused by trauma, but tearing the inside ligament of the big toe joint can cause bunions too.

Treatment is usually corrective bunion surgery, but custom molded orthotics and shoe modifications are also helpful.
