Case description

Intra-abdominal sepsis is an inflammation of the peritoneum caused by pathogenic microorganisms and their products. The inflammatory process may be localized (abscess) or diffuse in nature. Sepsis most frequently follows penetrating or blunt abdominal trauma or perforated appendicitis or diverticulitis.

The treatment of intra-abdominal sepsis orimarily consists of prompt surgical intervention. The role of the surgeon in the abdominal sepsis treatment is presented by J. Doucet MD.
