It is my great pleasure to invite you to attend the next IPITA Congress in 2017 which is being held in Oxford. This will be the first IPITA Congress hosted in the UK. The UK has a strong track record in the fields of whole pancreas and islet transplantation and has been instrumental in a number of key developments including being one of the first countries in the world to have a nationally commissioned clinical islet transplant programme, as well as establishing the first joint whole organ and islet donor pancreas allocation scheme.

Oxford, known as the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’, is an ideal location for a scientific meeting, combining the historical beauty of the city, with the world-renowned academic environment of the oldest University in the English-speaking world. It is easily accessible, with efficient transport links from Heathrow (50 miles) and Gatwick (80 miles) airports serving all major international cities.

The Congress will be based within the new ‘state of the art’ Mathematical Institute which is an outstanding conference facility and an ideal sized venue for an IPITA Congress. The close co-location of Congress venue, accommodation, and venues for the Social Programme, means that everything in Oxford is within walking distance, facilitating the ideal conditions for a relaxed and efficient meeting.

The Scientific Programme will cover all aspects of whole pancreas and islet transplantation (both research and clinical practice). The Congress will have a specific focus on:
– Developing increased collaboration between the whole pancreas and islet transplant communities with the aim of moving towards an integrated, patient-centred approach to beta-cell replacement.
– Providing a forum to explore the full range of novel ‘state of the art’ technologies relevant to beta-cell replacement.
– Equipping the next generation of clinicians, scientists, and the full multidisciplinary team working in the field of beta-cell replacement. A varied and exciting Social Programme will complement the scientific part of the meeting.

It is a great privilege to have been entrusted with hosting the IPITA 2017 Congress in Oxford. My team and I will work tirelessly to ensure that everything is put in place to ensure that the IPITA 2017 Congress is a great success for all involved. I look forward to welcoming you to our unique and special city.

Professor Paul Johnson
Chair of the Local Organising Committee, IPITA 2017
