Case description

Cardiologists use a coronary angiography to visualise blockages within the coronary vessels. From this the physician can determine if the patient is a candidate for a balloon angioplasty or if they need a coronary bypass surgery. This image shows an enlarged but otherwise normal heart. This image depicts a 40% occlusion of the left anterior descending artery (LAD). Here we see the deployment of the stent which is a wire mesh that will help to keep the artery open. This image shows us that the left anterior descending has been reopened, re-establishing blood flow.
