Case description

In heart transplantation, reinforcement of the vascular anastomoses with teflon felt can be employed to enhance suture-line integrity, particularly in cases where the recipient or donor vessels are fragile, calcified, or have been subjected to previous interventions. Thin strips or pledgets of Teflon felt are placed externally along the suture line to distribute tension evenly, reduce the risk of suture tearing through the vessel wall, and provide additional hemostatic support. This technique is especially useful in re-transplantation or in patients with connective tissue disorders, where native tissue strength may be compromised. Care must be taken to ensure that the felt does not cause luminal narrowing or interfere with the geometry of the anastomosis, while achieving a secure and hemostatic vascular connection.
