Case description

Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) is a cutting-edge technique that utilizes a specialized device to preserve and evaluate donor lungs outside the body before transplantation. The EVLP device maintains the lungs in a physiologic state by continuously perfusing them with a warm, oxygenated, and nutrient-rich solution while ventilating them in a protective manner. This system allows for functional assessment, recruitment of atelectatic areas, and even therapeutic interventions to improve marginal or initially unsuitable donor lungs. By extending the preservation time and enhancing lung quality, EVLP significantly increases the donor pool and improves transplant outcomes. Prominent systems include the Toronto XVIVO Perfusion System, Lung Assist, and Organ Care System (OCS), each with unique features for monitoring, control, and portability.
