In this talk, we delved into the evolving understanding of the inflammatory nature of keratoconus. While traditionally classified as a noninflammatory disease due to the absence of corneal neovascularization and inflammatory cell infiltration, recent studies have challenged this perspective. We examined evidence suggesting the involvement of inflammatory molecules and pathways, including elevated levels of cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases in the tears of affected individuals. This discussion highlights the potential role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of keratoconus and its implications for future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
