Greetings SGS colleagues!

As the President of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, it is my distinct honor to invite you to the 45th Annual Scientific Meeting in Tucson, Arizona from March 31 – April 3, 2019. The JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort is a world class destination where you can come bask in the incredible beauty of a forest of saguaros, see the sun set in a blaze of colors, and experience an endless variety of outdoor adventures. Dr. Brittany (Star) Hampton has led the SGS Scientific Program Committee to assemble an exciting, diverse program. The educational program along with the social events will straddle the perfect balance of scholarship and camaraderie we have come to expect at SGS meetings!

We have 4 practical post-graduate courses that you can choose to attend before the meeting. The topics include Hands on Laparoscopic Suturing Simulation, Quality Improvement Bootcamp, Strategies for Fibroid Management, and Sex and Surgery. Sunday evening, the Women’s Council will host a seminar on “Sponsorship and Mentorship: How to Move Women from the Pipeline to Positions of Leadership” led by Drs. Kim Kenton, Catherine Matthews, and Mark Walters.

Building on Dr. John Gebhart’s theme of Leadership, my focus has been “Looking Forward – Achieving Excellence in Gynecologic Surgery for Ourselves, Our Learners, and Our Patients!”. Each of the distinguished speakers will broaden our perspectives that should embolden our views of the future gynecologic surgeon. Dr. Gary Dunnington, the Jay L. Grosfeld Professor and Chair for the Department of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, will be our keynote lecturer. As a former president of the Association for Surgical Education and one of the five founding faculty for the ACS Surgeons as Educators course, he is perfect to teach us about “Measuring and Improving Performance in Surgical Training”. Our TeLinde Lecturer is Dr. Marcela G. del Carmen, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and is currently the Chief Medical Officer for the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization. She will talk about an area she is very passionate about, “Health Care Disparities in Gynecologic Oncology Surgery”.

We will have two panel discussions this year. The first will be the presidents from each of the major organizations (SGO, ACOG, SRS, AAGL, and AUGS) talking about how we can work together to shape the Future of Gynecologic Surgery. The second panel discussion will be distinguished legends of SGS talking about “Learning from our Mentors”.

There will be two special guest lecturers as well. Dr. Cheryl Iglesia will talk about “Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery and the Role of Energy-Based Therapies: Hype, Hope, and a Way Forward”. Dr. Sean Dowdy will give us an update on the latest recommendations regarding “Enhanced Recovery after Gynecologic Surgery”. And finally, we will host the 3rd annual mentorship roundtable session. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn from the legends in Gynecologic Surgery!

The enthusiasm to be a part of our wonderful organization continues to skyrocket! We had a record number of abstract and video submissions this year. This will continue to drive the quality of presentations to enhance our learning opportunity. It is truly an honor to represent this society and I look forward to hosting all of you in Tucson!

Sincerely,

Rajiv B Gala, MD
2018-2019 SGS President
