Dear Friends and Colleagues

It is my great pleasure and honour to announce the 28th Annual Congress of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons to be held in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy from the 25th to the 27th of May 2017 at the Congress Hall of the University of Pisa. The Congress of the European Research Council will be held at the same venue from the 24th to the 25th of May 2017.

Pisa is a small city on the Arno River which runs through it.

Pisa is famous for the renowned monument that characterizes it: the Leaning Tower (the Bell Tower of the Cathedral) which began leaning during its very construction (1173 A.D.)because of the instability of the ground. The Tower inclination was corrected during the long construction time (completed in 1372), but it continued to tilt over the centuries, so that a number of measures took place in the centuries until the last sophisticated intervention of “reconstructive architecture” recently required to prevent the Tower from falling.

Though small, Pisa is home to a famous university founded in 1343. It has close collaborations with other institutions of higher education of the city sharing with them the academic staff: Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa (founded in 1810 by Napoleonic decree, as twin institution of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris) and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies).

The University of Pisa is the only Italian university to belong to the Universities Research Association (URA), an international consortium of 89 leading research-oriented universities.

Famous people were born in Pisa and/or graduated in Pisa: Leonardo Fibonacci (c.1170-c.1250), mathematician; Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher; physicist Antonio Pacinotti (1841-1912); Giosué Carducci, poet and Nobel Prize in Literature (1906); Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize in Physics (1938); Carlo Rubbia, Nobel Prize in Physics (1984), and finally, the tenor Andrea Bocelli.

The international airport of Pisa is ten minutes by taxi from the Congress Centre, and the hotels which will host you. The City Centre is a ten minute walk from the Congress Centre.

Dear EURAPS and AAPS Friends, we are waiting for you. Also, feel free to invite a Colleague and submit your scientific contribution to the Congress so that it will be both interesting and challenging. We will make any effort to make your stay in Pisa the most pleasant.

Should you wish to plan a short holiday before or after the Congress, there are many attractions in the surrounding areas. Florence is an hour away by car or train; Lucca is 30 minutes by car, bus or train. The marble quarries of Carrara are just over an hour away, north of Pisa.
Then, there is the Elba Island, 100 km south of Pisa: it is really beautiful in May. It belongs to the Tuscany archipelago, some islands of which are still partly uncontaminated and fascinating to explore.

Looking forward to seeing you in Pisa.
Grazia Salimbeni
