On behalf of the organising committee it is our pleasure to invite you to the 84th Annual Scientific Congress in Perth, Western Australia. The congress starts with the convocation on Monday 4 May and concludes on Friday 8 May. We would also like to welcome our colleagues from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh who will be participating in this combined event.

The aim of the congress is to explore two particular themes. In the first instance there will be an acknowledgement of the one hundred year anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. This will take the form of a plenary session with a strong emphasis on the role of surgeons in military history throughout the scientific sessions. A second theme that will run throughout the congress will be that of medical ethics. Two plenary sessions will be dedicated to topics surrounding the difficulties encountered by clinicians who have ever increasingly sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic interventions at their disposal.

There will also be a number of workshops and breakfast masterclasses that will cover a wide range of issues. Access to the Clinical Training Evaluation Centre (CTEC) at the nearby University of Western Australia has opened up the potential for a number of courses to be provided.
