Case description

Different echocardiographic views show multiple calcifications in the heart in a case of chronic kidney failure with hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). The parathyroid hormone regulates calcium and phosphate levels and helps to maintain these levels. Calcification is the process in which calcium builds up in body tissue. In many cases calcification is a normal part of aging or the result of an injury. It can also be a cause of presented here hyperparathyroidism. Video by Maged Al Ali MD.
