Gastroenterology is a specialty that straddles the traditional boundary between internal medicine and general surgery. The mutual distrust and lack of co-operation between physicians and surgeons is legendary. Such animosity is one of the major factors that has thwarted development in the specialty. A major factor that allows our group to establish an international reputation in a relatively short time is our esprit de corp. Since the inception of the new medical school and the teaching hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in the early 80's, very close co-operation between the medical and surgical gastroenterology teams was established. In this way, resources and experiences can be shared and there are excellent opportunities for cross-fertilization of ideas and innovations. Over the last two decades, the success of this model has been phenomenal. In collaboration with our surgeons, scientists, cancer biologists, and outcome researchers, we are committed to consolidating the group by formally establishing the Institute of Digestive Disease (IDD), CUHK.
Missions of IDD
