The number of people with diagnosed overweight or obesity is rapidly growing worldwide. The problem concerns both, children and adults. According to World Health Organization, there is 1,6 bn overweight and 522 m obese people around the world. The latest research conducted in the United States showed that high-fat diet impairs cognitive processes of human organism such as memory or learning.
Short-term memory is a type of memory that stores a relatively small amount of information for short period of time. Assessment of short-term memory is useful as a screening tool for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease. Previous studies have indicated associations between intake of dairy products, better cognitive function and increase in short-term memory. However, these studies have not considered genetic, family or environmental factors. Scientists from the Department of Health Promotion Science (Osaka) and the Center for Twin Research (Osaka) evaluated the impact of the above factors and the dairy products rich diet on a research group made up of twins.
