On October 25th surgeons from the Department of General, Endocrine and Vascular Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw – Małgorzata Szostek, Wawrzyniec Jakuczun, Natalia Wrzesińska and Sebastian Willenberg performed two endovascular aortic aneurysms repairs (EVAR) with the use of augmented reality goggles – Microsoft HoloLens. That were one of the first that kind of procedures in the world.

Patients operated on were 79 years old male and 74 years old female. Thanks to Carna Life Holo module made by polish company MedApp surgeons were able to see during the procedures 3D holographic reconstructions of patient’s anatomy. Microsoft HoloLens use augmented reality which means that surgeon can display holograms in any place and configuration and it is not interfering with the field of vision. This technology helps to plan the operation but it is also beneficial during the surgery itself. In the future it could have many more applications in medicine.

Similar operation using the same technology was performed few days earlier in Szczecin. Polish cardiologists are also pioneers in using holograms during cardiologic procedures.
