Case description

70 year old lady, smoker with a history of resected colorectal cancer, found to have a spiculated 15mm mass in the superior segment of the right lower lobe. FDG PET shows no other sites of disease. Being medial in location it was not suitable for percutaneous biopsy. We planned to perform a segmentectomy, provided the station 12 lymph nodes on intra-operative frozen section examination was not positive for malignancy. The DaVinci Xi robotic surgical system was used. This should provide oncologically adequate treatment regardless of the final diagnosis of metastatic colorectal cancer or primary lung cancer. The surgery went well and she was discharged from hospital on the morning of the second post-operative day. Final diagnosis was T1bN0M0 adenocarcinoma lung.
