Case description

The eustachian tube in a physiological state is closed and only becomes open upon swallowing or yawning. When it is abnormally patent, eustachian tube allows spontaneous airflow to pass through the middle ear cleft easily. The air streams are transmitted by the conduction mechanism in the middle ear and finally perceived by the cochlea as the sound. It happens either unilaterally or bilaterally. Usually a patient complains about hearing his/her own breathings and such a condition can be annoying and unacceptable. In this video we can see a roving anterosuperoior segment movements of the left eardrum during the spontaneous respirations (the segment is an atrophic healed perforation).
