Totally Extra-Peritoneal Laparoscopic Repair Of A Femoral Hernia

Rate:

Case description

Totally extra-peritoneal (TEP) laparoscopic repair of a femoral hernia. TEP is performed in the preperitoneal space and was developed to avoid the risks associated with entering the peritoneal cavity. The surgeon develops a space between the peritoneum and the anterior abdominal wall so that the peritoneum is never violated. In experienced hands, this approach has the advantage of eliminating the risk of intraabdominal adhesion formation. Femoral hernia is a relatively rare form of herniation. Of all the groin hernias that occur in the general population,it comprises 2% to 8% of them and 30% in females. Femoral hernia is associated with a high incidence of incarceration, omental and intestinal necrosis, and higher morbidity and mortality. An obstruction and strangulation rate of up to 30% to 86% has been reported in the literature. Video by Lee M Morris, MD, Melanie L Hafford, MD, Patrick R Reardon, MD
