Case description

The main goal of the heart valve repair is to restore the proper function of the valve. If the surgery is done properly it allows the surgeon to avoid using of an artificial valve and complications associated with it. Traditionally valve repair is a open-heart procedure necessitating the usage of cardiopulmonary bypass and consists of several different procedures which allow the surgeon to separate leaflets, repair leaflets that are torn and reshape the parts of the valve, depending on the particular valve problem. If the valvular problem lasts for a long time it can cause also atrial fibrilation, which increases the risk of thromboembolic events, such as stroke.

In the following video the case of 73 years old male patient with severe mitral regurgitation and tricuspid insufficiency is presented. What's more, the patient suffered from heart failure (NYHA III) and atrial fibrilation. The patient underwent the mitral and tricuspid valve repair surgery combined with the ablation of atrial fibrilation.

Presented by Professor Attilio Renzulli.
