Case description

Diabetes can cause a narrowing and thickening of blood vessels called atherosclerosis. A plaque is a thickening of the vessel wall resulting from a damage to the blood vessel this can result in the blockage of the vessel resulting in reduced blood flow. With reduced blood flow, there is less oxygen delivered to the tissues affecting their functionality and viability. Atherosclerosis can occur throughout the body and can affect the heart causing heart attacks, the brain causing strokes and the distal circulation causing peripheral artery disease which can cause pain and loss of a limb.
